How do I tell if I have bed bugs?
It’s always best to get a bed bug inspection and/or opinion from an experienced bed bug exterminator. However if you don’t want to wait or just want to know right now…here’s some tips from Arizona bed bug experts.
Bites on the skin are usually a poor indicator of a infestation. Bed bug bites can look like bites from other insects (such as mosquitoes or chiggers), rashes (such as eczema or fungal infections), or even hives. Some people do not react to bed bug bites at all. In fact we often encounter wives covered with bite marks while the husband who sleeps beside her has no evidence of bite marks.

Start with an inspection. Experienced exterminators will start in areas that humans are consistently in between the hours of 12AM-5AM. That is usually a bed, beds, couch or computer chair. Bed bugs nest close to their food source and you are usually the source. When not feeding, bed bugs nest in a variety of places. They like to nest in out of sight areas like under mattresses, in box springs, head boards, and/or near baseboards. Electrical covers that are not flush to the drywall are common nesting areas.
Unless the bed bug infestation is heavy the chances of seeing the critters outside of feeding hours is slim. Being familiar with the signs of these critters is a must if you hope to detect their presence during daylight.
Bed bugs generally nest together and mark their territory with fecal matter. Multiple dark spots (about this size: •), which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker is a good indication of a nesting area.
Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm) and pale yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger are a little harder to detect. Finding these is an indication of a nearby nest. Usually multiple eggshells are found together.
Small blood stains that appear rusty or reddish on bed sheets, mattresses and pillows is a sure indicator of these little monsters. These stains are caused by bed bugs that have recently fed being crushed or unknowingly being rolled on by unsuspecting hosts.
