5 Problems Everyone Has with Bed Bug Pest Control – How to Solve Them

Bed Bug Pest Control Phoenix Az – Image creepy crawlers waiting for you to fall asleep so they can suck the blood out of your body?  Seems like a scene in a cheesy horror film?  Unfortunately, this can be in real life.  Similar scenes play out across Metropolitan Phoenix Arizona daily, or rather nightly.

For many getting bed bugs is much easier than getting rid of them.  It doesn’t have to be that way. Here are 5 problems everyone has with bed bug pest control – how to solve them.

Problem #1 – How do I know if I have bed bugs and do I need pest control?

Bed BugOne of the first inklings of a problem is discovering bite marks.  Bites occur commonly on exposed skin, such as the upper body, neck, arms, and shoulders. Individuals bitten by bed bugs can develop itching, red welts or swelling the day or within days after being bitten.

Bite marks from bed bugs can be visible the morning after an attack.  They can also appear days after an attack.  Usually, the bites appear in regions of the body that are accessible to the critters.  Areas with little to no human hair are easier for bed bugs to access.

What do they look like? Bed bugs are beetles. Adults are oval, flattened, reddish-brown, and wingless insects approximately 1/4″ to 3/8″ long (5-9 mm). They can be mistaken for carpet beetles and/or ticks as they are somewhat similar in appearance. During feeding their color changes from brown to purplish-red as they digest blood from unsuspecting victims. After feeding they are larger and more cigar-shaped. Immature bugs are smaller, 1/16″ (1.6 mm) when they first hatch, and nearly colorless except after feeding, but resemble the adult in general shape.

So, you are being bit and don’t see any bugs!?  Not uncommon.  These pests are nocturnal.  Unless the infestation is large they are often unseen preferring to stay tucked away in nesting areas during daylight.  They usually feed between midnight and first light.

Bed Bug CSI

If you’re not seeing live bugs it may be time for a little detective work.  Inspect bedsheets and pillow casings for signs of dried human blood.  Small circular blood stains are a good indication of recent feeding.

Check mattress and box springs for fecal matter.  Bed bug fecal matter appears similar to black ink spots.  Usually clusters of these “black ink spots” appear near nesting areas between mattresses and bed frames.

Discarded skin from younger bugs that have molted can often be seen near nesting areas. The difference between a skin and an actual bug is that the exoskeleton will appear empty and translucent and obviously cannot move.

If you are seeing any of these symptoms we recommend calling a bed bug pest control expert.

Problem #2 – Where did they come from?

Phoenix bed bugsAn important element to getting rid of this menace is knowing where they came from.  Consumers are best served to find the source and taking steps to prevent re-infestation.

Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers. They are often transported from one location to another hidden within the luggage.

In most scenarios, we see infestations come from overnight travel or by entertaining overnight guests.  Following in a close third is bringing in the critters hidden within infested furniture.  Used furniture and mattresses are a source of many infestations.

Even with the best bed bug pest control service(s), re-infestation can occur with the introduction of new insects.

Problem # 3 – Who do I call?

Not all pest control bed bugs exterminators are the same.  Consumers are best served to find a bed bug expert.  There are many options for eliminating these pests.  The “best treatment method” will vary from one infestation to another.  Exterminators locked into only one method to eliminate this menace may not always serve the best interests of the consumer.
